These Terms are the agreement for using the Sessionist app and the website at sessionist.ie. By using Sessionist you accept them. Sessionist is operated by Niall Kelleher, a sole trader in Ireland (13 Vesey Place, Dublin, A96 R3H2); contact support@sessionist.ie.
You can try Sessionist as a guest, without an account, on a small set of demo tunes; guest play is not saved. Listen and Repeat and Practice Mode runs beyond the demo tunes need an account, and registration asks for your year of birth. Social and community features are available only where the declared year of birth is 16 or older; under-16s cannot turn them on. You confirm that the year of birth you give is true — giving a false age may result in suspension or closure of the account.
Keep your login details secure; you are responsible for activity under your account; tell us at support@sessionist.ie of any unauthorised use. One account per person.
You agree not to: post or share content that is offensive, discriminatory, hateful or illegal; harass, abuse or threaten others; bypass age limits; use bots, scripts or scraping against the service; access other users’ accounts or data; reverse engineer, copy or resell the app except as the law allows; or use Sessionist for any unlawful purpose. (This restricts use of the service, not the open tune data — see section 8.)
You keep ownership of content you submit (playlists, names, recordings). You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display and distribute it within the service to provide the features you use. Section 5 says exactly what that means for recordings. All content must be your own or properly licensed, lawful, suitable for an audience that includes children, and not AI-generated music or artwork.
5.1 Content you upload to Sessionist stays yours. Everything you upload to Sessionist still belongs to you, not to Sessionist: audio recordings, tune images and playlists. You never lose control of it. You can choose to unshare it or delete it as you wish.
Each practice of a tune is recorded for your records. These remain on the device and never leave the device unless you explicitly choose to share it. Sharing is voluntary and adults-only (16+), and you approve each recording separately. Guides and competition entries are reviewed by a human moderator before anyone else can hear them. Performances shared with friends are not moderated by a human.
5.2 Contributing a guide recording. After a qualifying practice run the app may show a Contribute button. Pressing it offers that one recording as a guide track for the tune. It grants Sessionist a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to:
We never edit your performance: no cutting, retiming or pitch correction. For certain popular tunes, the slot containing your contributed audio may be automatically opened for another user to offer a guide audio for. If your audio is replaced it will still appear in your “My Sharing” tab so you have a complete record of everything you’ve uploaded.
5.3 Sharing with friends. Sending a recording to friends grants the licence in section 4 for the friends you choose, and nobody else.
5.4 Un-sharing, at any time. You can withdraw anything you have shared or contributed, at any time, in Settings → My Sharing. Depending on the content type, the content may disappear from Sessionist immediately or upon the next update of the relevant catalog. The licence ends, the recording is no longer served, and devices that cached it will automatically delete it the next time they check for updates. Anonymous play counts in section 8 are kept. That record is how often a tune and its real audio and midi sub tracks were played, not who you are.
Leaderboards, competitions and friends are for adults who opt in; your display name (not your email) is shown to others, and you can block or unfriend anyone. You can report content or users that breach these Terms — in the app or at support@sessionist.ie. We review reports and may freeze or remove content and suspend or remove accounts. There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behaviour.
7.1 The purchase. Sessionist is free to use, with a daily limit on Listen and Repeat and Practice runs. A one-time purchase removes that limit. It is not a subscription: you pay once and are never charged again. The unlock belongs to the Sessionist account you are signed in to when you buy, and works on every device you sign in to with that account. Price: €2.99 including VAT on sessionist.ie. In the App Store and Google Play the store shows its own price for your country, including any local tax. The app's buy button always shows the price the store or checkout will charge.
7.2 Who sells it. Where you buy decides who takes the payment and who handles a refund.
7.3 14-day refund. If you ask within 14 days of buying, you get a full refund, for any reason. For App Store purchases the decision is Apple's. If Apple refuses a request made in that window, email us. A refund removes the unlock from your account and the daily limit applies again. One refund per account: a second purchase on the same account after a refund is not refundable under this clause. Clause 7.4 and your statutory rights still apply.
7.4 If it doesn't work. If the purchase doesn't do what these Terms and the app say it does, email support@sessionist.ie. Examples: the unlock never reaches your account, or the app doesn't run on a device it lists as supported. We fix it or refund you, at any time, as consumer law requires. For App Store purchases we fix it, or you can ask Apple for a refund.
7.5 How to ask.
Refunds go back to the original payment method. Once a refund is issued, Paddle and Google usually return the money within a few business days. Apple's timing is Apple's.
7.6 Countries where it isn't sold. The purchase is not sold in every country. The checkout says so before you pay. If a purchase goes through from a country where it isn't sold, we refund it in full.
7.7 Charge-backs. Email us before disputing a charge with your bank. It is usually faster. A charge-back removes the unlock while it is open, and permanently if the money is returned to you. This does not affect your right to dispute a charge under card-scheme rules or consumer law.
The traditional tunes themselves are in the public domain. Sessionist’s tune catalogue contains information from The Session, which is made available here under the Open Database License (ODbL); our catalogue is a derivative database under the same licence, and nothing in these Terms restricts what the ODbL permits you to do with that data — see our Open Data page. Sessionist’s own arrangements, notation playback, software, design and branding are ours. Recordings contributed by users are not: they belong to the people who recorded them (section 5). we grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-commercial licence to use the app. You keep ownership of your own content, subject to section 4. Sessionist keeps an anonymous count of how often each tune is played, in what way and for how long, as a record for rights holders; it holds nothing about you — see the Privacy Policy.
You can delete your account at any time in the app. We may suspend or end your access for breach of these Terms (for example a false age, abuse, or prohibited content); content you published may then be removed.
Sessionist is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty that it is uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits or goodwill. Nothing here limits any liability that cannot be limited by law, and your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.
We may update these Terms; we change the “Last updated” date above and flag significant changes in the app or by email. These Terms are governed by Irish law and subject to the courts of Ireland; if you are a consumer you may also rely on the mandatory laws of your country of residence.
